Multimodality is defined as the use of different modes to convey an idea. Multiple modes can be put together to make what is called a medium. A medium is anything that is used to get an idea across. As we learned in a past class, almost anything can be considered a mode. This multimodality is applied to all forms of text, be it, books music, tv or movies. The different arrangement of modes is why genre differs. Genre is a set of expectations that are used to classify different types of multimodalities. For example if I go to see a horror movie, I can expect the movie to scare me. I expect the movie to have arranged its modes in the right way to that it fit’s the genre that it is supposed to be. I wouldn’t expect to be laughing or having a merry time while going to see a horror movie. I expect there to be scary scenes, accompanied by scary music, and all other modes that go into making a horror genre movie. In the class of Genres however, there may be many different types of genres however there are very few modes. Modes are just rearranged to make one genre into a completely different genre. Take the rearranged Frozen trailer for example. The basis of the story was the same, the only thing they switched up was lighting and music, and it was transformed from a children’s movie into a horror flick. Multimodality is what directly effects what genre the idea will be put into.
