There is a distinct relationship between multimodality and genre. They both rely on each other in order for one or the other to be effective. If the right mode is not chosen for a specific genre then it will not be as successful if the current mode was chosen for a certain genre. Modes restrict certain mediums just as genres do. Genres only allow certain information to be told. Similarly, modes only allow certain aspects of a medium to be used in order to be categorized as such. Genres set up expectation for its reader. Someone who is reading a mystery novel expects to be left begging for more inflation about the story at hand, if suddenly the novel becomes comical the reader would not consider it a mystery but a comedy. Modes also give the reader distinct expectation on what they will be reading. Knowing a certain work is going to be using videos and images allows the reader to choose if they are interested or not in the work. Multimodality and genres are both restrictor, enabler’s, and both establish expectations about the work at hand.
