Multimodality is the use of several modes to create messages. The modes contribute to the multimodality of how certain things affect an audience. A mode is anything dealing with communication. The modes can influence what the audience perceives. Therefore, it is important to have an audience in mind and to gear the modes to that particular audience for the best result. Both Kress and Wysocki discuss what multimodality is to them. Kress believed what was most important was the “temporal and sequential logic”. He thought that modes were meaningful and that the timing of it mattered. Kress thought it was important to pick a mode based on what happened and what will happen. On the other hand, Wysocki focused more on spacing. She thought how words are spaced and placed can influence how we think about something. She also thought it was important to have the right mode for a certain audience. Spacing and shaping are ways that can change how we view words or whatever it is we are looking at.
