Modes are the way in which certain ideas are presented or communicated according to what is being exhibited. Communication is the main topic Kress and Wysocki address. Multimoldality is the act of combining different modes that you think will work better for a subject to communicate a message across space. One mode might not be sufficient enough to stress a topic that the communicator would like to illustrate so then multiple modes are used each in a way that strikes a chord with the target audience. According to Kress the message you are trying to emphasize is all based upon the audience that you are targeting. Certain modes are able to more effectively communicate the writer’s intentions than another might. The communicator is constructs the message in a certain manner that conveys a certain meaning instead of just randomness that takes up space. For example the mode of writing is specialized to carry formal information according society. Kress stresses the importance of using various modes to help connect the communications intentions with the audience. Wysocki puts emphasis on how vital space is when it comes to how we interpret readings, texts and so on. Space can come in many facets whether it is spatial separation on top or bottom of the page, right and left as well. This is sequential when speaking of images as we see everything as a whole and will relate everything no matter where it is found. Kress does come back to speak about the importance of the alphabetic text and how we take textual elements and embody them in our mind. It all comes down to how we construct the message we are trying to send so that it is the most effective it can be.
