Multimodality is the combination of many modes to convey an
important message to the audience. As Kress said in his interview, the main
reason that multimodality is so important is because of communication. As Kress
was saying, there are modes that are better for certain messages and certain
audiences, as a messenger, whether you be an author or a journalist, you have
to find the best fit modes to relay the message to your audience. I would
define mode as the means in which a messenger provides the message to the
audience, a mode can have a range from a certain color to whether you chose to
make an article or a blog. Kress and Wysocki treat space and time so
differently, although I didn’t quite understand what Kress was implying about
space and time in his interview, reading Wysocki’s piece helped me gain a
better understanding. Kress, from my understanding doesn’t think that space and
time are extremely important when relaying a message to an audience. Whereas,
Wysocki thinks it makes all the difference in the world, because spacing
between words makes it easier to read. Wysocki also doesn’t like the way that
Kress handled image, and its limitations, basically our view of what an image
is greatly affects how we perceive that image. Time changes what’s acceptable,
because Emily Dickinson could turn in a graduate paper on crayon and paper, but
that wouldn’t be acceptable now, Police could spray people with fire hoses in
the 60s, but that wouldn’t be as acceptable now.
