blog post 6

Multimodality is the mixture and combination of different modes to communicate. I would say that in order for something to be a mode, the texts need to interact with each other in an effort to convey a message. To put it simply a mode is a way to communicate a message. Some modes include writing, pictures, videos, speeches, and many more modes. An example used in this video was a website. When you enter the website, you see a video that is playing. There are also still images and pieces of writing below and around texts. The writing near an image provides context to the picture. Communication is the focal point of both Kress and Wysocki’s work. In Kress’ article, Kress focuses more on the different ways modes can be put together to thoroughly construct an idea; where as, Wysocki stresses more the visual argument and the importance of time and space between texts. Kress also goes into depth about coherence. He wants to have everything flowing and have everything look normal. If you have important news on a website you would want to have everything look coherent. Important news should be put on the left side as opposed to having news scattered around the site. Wysocki goes in depth about spaces. She says a visual space is natural for when we read a text. Kress did not find time and space as essential as Wysocki did, he focused more on the simple idea of a cluster of different modes coming together convey some kind of message to the audience.
