The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum
-Published in 1900 through George M. Hill Company
-The “original” version of the story
-The story, itself, is about a girl named Dorothy Gale who
is caught in a cyclone and transported to the Land of Oz, and embarks on a
journey to get back home to her home in Kansas.
-Alice in Wonderland inspired the author.
-In the original book Dorothy’s time in Oz is real, not a
dream.
-The film adaptation in 1939 completely eliminated the novel’s
prominently feminist themes and portrays Dorothy as a damsel in distress. The
film also changed Dorothy’s silver shoes to “ruby slippers”
-It was also adapted as the “Muppets Wizard of Oz” in 2005
-Oz the Great and Powerful (2013) starring James Franco
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzegerald
-The novel follows the lives of characters living in the
West and East Egg outside of New York City in 1925.
-He was inspired by the roaring 20’s, World War I, The Jazz
Age
-The book has been adapted into a movie six times since it
was published
-The Great Gatsby (2013) starring Leonardo DiCaprio: This
adaption introduces the narrator Nick Carraway as being a mental patient due to
the events that happened that summer. Jordan Baker and Nick’s romance storyline
is completely cut out. Daisy is portrayed as very ditzy rather than daring. The
animation and music are very contemporary.
Cinderella (1950)
-Film produced by Walt Disney
- Is an adaption of the 1697 European folk tale
-Adapted again in 2004 in, “A Cinderella Story” starring
Hilary Duff: this was the “modern” version of the story, which takes place in
Los Angeles. The main character Sam is a high school student who lives with her
“evil step-mother” and her two children.
-Cinderella by the Cheetah Girls (song with anti-Cinderella themes)
-Various other film adaptions
