Richards is simply stating that words are not always what they seem.. Words are nothing, they are sounds they have meaning and nothing about words should ever be assumed until read in full context. We bring meaning to words by putting them into sentences in the way we choose. Since there are multiple definitions of words you must read around the words, into context to find out how the word is often being used. For example the word “gay” can be used in two completely separate ways. It can be used to describe someone who is happy, or someone who is a homosexual. You can never just take words at face value because you can never be sure how the writer is choosing to use it. Nowadays, slang terms are used so often that it is imperative that you read into the context to find out how words are actually being used and what they are being used for.

This relates to the idea of remix because the whole idea of different interpretations of words is a remix. Slang being one of the biggest examples you can point out. Slang is without a doubt a remix of an already established language. Slang is used all around and can easily be misinterpreted to mean something else. The entire English language is a remix that is constantly changing over and over. Things always develop new meanings and can be interpreted differently. A word that meant one thing fifty years ago may not necessarily mean the same thing today.
