Blog Post 5 - Vitor M.

When writing my genealogy essay, I noticed that writing a six-page paper definitely wasn’t my preferred method of showcasing how superhero characters are alike. I constantly found myself trying to use vivid words and examples, but sometimes that just isn’t enough. I like the idea that I will be able to choose a different medium to explain myself in my genealogy. By using a visual showcase, I can assure myself that the audience will be able to capture exactly what I’m saying, without the need of having to stop and think, “Is that what Batman looked like in the ‘60’s?”
The first method I was thinking of using was the traditional Power Point, for an older audience like my parents. Power Points are the classic way of visually showcasing a project effectively, leaving the need of forcing your audience to incorrectly picture things. I know that my father is far-sighted and would hate to read a six-page essay typed in twelve-point font.
Secondly, I would make a small poster-board using plenty of pictures displaying superheroes’ similarities. Under each image or specific category, I would type a small explanation of what exactly is being compared. This method is geared towards students my age who have trained eyes to quickly look over a presentation and capture the overall idea.
The last, and least preferred method would be to make an online web page of some sort. By choosing Marvel or DC themes and wallpapers, it could easily be one of the most visual choices out of the three. This method would involve the most time because of the massive amounts of customization required for such a project. On the other hand, if I wanted an exceptional grade from any given professor, this is what I would resort to.

            Considering my genealogy project was based off of the story of Cinderella, I think the first audience I would target for the remediation would be a younger group of people; for example, elementary or middle school students. Cinderella is an old time Classic that has dated back through the centuries either in the form of a written down story, like being a folk tale, or even remade by Disney into a movie. Many people, especially a younger crowd, are usually very familiar with the story already so a remediation of this idea would be fairly easy, especially with the audience I have chosen. I would approach this group with maybe a slide show or maybe even a poster board showing the different aspects of the movie and the way it changes over the course of time. Another audience I would focus on could be young adults. Many of them are well informed with the movie Cinderella, and if they didn’t watch it growing up then they may have children of their own that are currently being exposed to the story at home. I could also present to them in the form of a power point slide show or maybe some kind of presentation depicting the actual story, along with the way that Cinderella advances through time and the different ways the story can vary.

The definition of a remediation is to change something into a different medium. I think this project is a very interesting assignment because we get to change something we heavily researched into another project that is simpler and gets a point across more clearly. My genealogy paper was about the many different versions of the story of Cinderella. With this topic, I can target many different audiences for the remediation assignment. My first idea for my remediation is to do a poster with a photo collage of all the different Cinderella stories and think of a sort of inspirational quote that represents the main idea and the main lesson of all the different remixes of Cinderella. I think this remediation project would target teenagers, because the lesson or quote will be something that is beneficial to teens. My second idea was to do a power point presentation about the many different common factors of the different stories. I think this would target a group of people who are looking to make another version of Cinderella. This would be helpful because they can see all the aspects that make Cinderella such a popular story. People are always trying to make new adaptations of fairytales and it would be helpful to see the most popular parts of the famous story. My third idea for a remediation is a poem about the plot of Cinderella. This would target English teachers, because they could read the poem before they taught a lesson about Cinderella.

For my remediated Genealogy paper, I plan to target one of three different demographics and use different mediums for each demographic.  The first demographic I could target is the juniors and seniors in high school who are beginning their process of becoming college students and this remediated Genealogy paper can serve as a tool for which they can gauge their comprehension of college rhetoric and material.  Since teenagers are very knowledgeable about technology, I would transform my Genealogy paper into a Prezi or potentially even an interactive website.  The second the demographic I could target would be the educators who are involved in this field of language and textual analysis.  My remediated paper could be presented in front of educators at a conference about text genealogy.  The appropriate medium for this would be a series of visuals that correspond with a prepared speech.  The visuals would enhance my speech and make what I am saying easier to comprehend.  The third demographic I could target is the common adult who would want to take a new perspective on the world around them.  These adults might not be aware or have ever done textual analysis before.  In order to accomplish this, I would have to break every little component of my Genealogy paper and show the connections between everything.  The most comprehendible way of doing this would be to construct a textual web of my Genealogy paper and have strings branching out from each component of my paper.  On the strings, I could describe how each part of my Genealogy paper was transformed and combined.  Any three of these remediated mediums would make my Genealogy paper comprehendible across each of the targeted demographic.

My genealogy is on the history of tattoos, the origins of tattoos, and the connections of tattoos and acupuncture. In order to be featuring my genealogy to the right people I would propose it to an audience of those who practice alternative medicine. I would propose it to those who believe in alternative medicine in a visual way; due to the fact they seem to like evidence. A visual stimulation I would use may be a short video, a poster, or a sales representative video. I would propose this genealogy to this group of people in the following way due to the fact that acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine that some people swear by. Some of these people don’t like the works of tattoos, but what if they knew they were just the same thing, minus the ink?

Furthermore, I may depict my genealogy to an audience of young adults who are interested in tattoos. In this presentation, my medium would have to be a (Prezzi) presentation. In order to depict to, the young adults, the pictures, the sounds, and the history, without becoming bore some to young adults, the presentation would be the best option. This is due to the fact it can incorporate all of the following in it without being so time consuming a young viewer would lose attention.

Lastly, I could depict my genealogy of the study and history of tattoos to a tattoo artist. Although they are probably continuers in the subject and I am merely scraping the surface, it could be a great experience to get feedback in order to further my research.

I was thinking that since my genealogy was on fashion, an audience that would be very interested would be fashion designers. I could show them that everything they've “created” has been created before. A good way to deliver this message would probably be through a collage. Another good way to deliver this message could also be through a timeline, showing the origins of all the popular things right now, such as skinny jeans, nose piercings, and crop tops. Under each picture, whether it be a collage or a timeline I could include a very small caption that will explain the significance of each picture. Another idea I thought of was to do a recycling model for each fashion aspect I discussed in my paper. For instance, I would do skinny jeans in the middle of the recycling figure and start with the 17^th, 18^th century, and end with the 2010s being right next to the 17^th, 18^th century. Also, I could make a fashion cycle, like the one I discussed in my paper for all three things (skinny jeans, nose piercings, and crop tops) and write the years when each of the clothing was at the part of the fashion cycle. Along with that year would be a picture of someone who wore it, for instance for skinny jeans in the 2010s I would put a picture of a teenager or even Beyonce when she wears skinny jeans. No matter which of these routes I decide to choose, the general audience of my remediation would be a group of fashion designers. 

Remediation Ideas

My first audience could definitely be me presenting it to my parents. To present something to my parents about a subject that they might know a whole lot about like TMNT, I feel something visual would be helpful. Since my paper is essentially the evolution of the TMNT series, a flow chart showing the ways they have evolved through the years would be clear, concise and to the point. My parents would be able to understand it very easily.


Another audience could be a very young group of students, like lets say a class of 3rd graders. For this I would need something visual to, not so many words, but something interesting that would keep their attention. I would do a digital photo collage. This would make it so that there are very few words so that the kids could really focus in on the project the whole time. It may be a little juvenile but considering the audience, you would have to dumb it down just a little.


My last audience could be a group of my own peers. For this something more intellectual and creative would be needed. I could construct something like a blog, commenting on all the different changes in TMNT history and date the posts as if I was posting in real time. I could post what changed, what I liked and didn't like about the change, and what overall influenced the change. Considering this project was about remixes. This would make it very easy for me to cite real influences and really make the project feel like it has been a blog that has been going on for twenty or so years.
